Apple finally“backtracks”: MacBook Pro is getting a touchscreen
Apple has officially confirmed a special event called“Pro and tell”in Los Angeles on October 28 local time, which falls at 1:00 a.m. on October 29 Beijing time. Greg Joswiak and Apple’s Greater China managing director have both teased the event, hinting that several“Pro-level”products will be revealed next week.

MacBook Pro
This time, the spotlight is on MacBook Pro
This is Apple’s second event in October, coming shortly after its October 13 smart home update. Many believe the“Pro and tell”theme is a direct nod to MacBook Pro. The big question isn’t whether there will be new products, but whether Apple will finally bring touch input to the Mac.
Screen and interaction could be the biggest change
The new MacBook Pro is expected to come in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, featuring Apple’s first OLED touchscreen on a Mac, with tandem OLED technology for better brightness, contrast, and color. The notch is likely to be replaced by a smaller Dynamic Island-style cutout, though it may not support Face ID.

In terms of interaction, Apple is unlikely to turn the Mac into a tablet. The keyboard and trackpad will remain, and the system is expected to adjust its interface depending on whether you’re using a mouse or your fingers. Early signs of touch support have already appeared in macOS 27 betas, suggesting Apple has been preparing for this shift.
The chip strategy is a bit unexpected
Many originally expected the high-end MacBook Pro to debut with M6 Pro or M6 Max chips. However, newer reports suggest Apple may skip M6 Pro and M6 Max to accelerate the M7 roadmap. The high-end touchscreen models are likely to keep the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, the same as the current models released in March.
At the same time, the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro is expected to receive the new M6 chip. This would create a two-track strategy: a redesigned high-end touchscreen model and a more conventional chip upgrade for the entry-level version.
Prices could move higher

With the addition of a touchscreen and OLED panel, the starting price of the new MacBook Pro is expected to rise. Supply-chain estimates suggest the 14-inch model could start around $2,499, while the 16-inch model may start near $2,999, roughly $500 higher than the current high-end configurations.
This isn’t Apple’s first attempt at touch
In 2016, Apple introduced the Touch Bar on MacBook Pro, attempting to bring touch input to the Mac. It was eventually removed in 2021 due to a fragmented experience and limited developer support. Ten years later, touch is moving from a narrow strip above the keyboard to the main display itself.

Still, this looks more like a high-end differentiation strategy. Touch input, OLED, a new chassis, and Dynamic Island form a fresh design language that will debut on the premium MacBook Pro, while entry-level models continue with routine upgrades.
The real test comes after launch
Whether a touchscreen MacBook Pro will truly change how people use Macs remains to be seen. It may function more as a premium add-on than a must-have feature. The outcome will depend on how natural the touch experience feels, how well macOS adapts, and whether developers embrace the new interaction model.
